Community Design Teams

Each school year students in Pullman participate in
community design team projects. Student teams prepare a master plan, a planting plan, and supplemental drawings for residential or small business landscape designs of up to one acre. Most project sites are in the Pullman/Moscow area, with occasional projects in other areas of Washington or Idaho.

Generally students tour the site and meet with the client during the first half of the fall semester. Needs for the site are discussed, and from this information students prepare preliminary concept plans. The preliminary plans are submitted to the client during the winter and modifications are discussed. Final plans are presented to the client in April. The cost to the client for this service is $565, plus additional fees (up to $50) for reproduction costs.

If you are interested in having a student team prepare a landscape plan for your residence or small business, please review the Design Agreement.

Information for Students:

Student teams are selected early in the fall semester. Each team consists of a student Project Manager, and between 2 and 5 additional students. The project manager is the primary client contact and is also responsible for coordinating the various phases of the design process with the team. A faculty advisor is assigned to each team and provides guidance and advice as needed.

For many students, this is a first-time experience with 'real' clients and a 'real' project. It is a great chance to review the design process from beginning to end, to work on a design plan as a group, and to interact with members of the community. It can be a lot of fun and a valuable learning experience. There is also COMPENSATION. Team member are paid a small fee ($150 split among the total number of students in the team who finish the project), and will receive a letter of appreciation from the client. Students can register for UP to 2 units of college credit. These units are 'graded' on a pass/fail basis and are generally awarded during the spring semester.
